Off Air, 2023

In late 2022, I discovered PapperSaxsten (Jenny Haynes) and her inspiring work. After spending much of 2022 exploring curved piecing, I was drawn to her designs. I had to know more, so I enrolled in the 2023 Not Just Curves Block of the Month program…curved blocks designed by Jenny Haynes and geometric blocks by Lucy Engels. The circular blocks were sewn, cut and resewn to create fascinating blocks. Colour choice and placement caused startling changes in the appearance of the finished block. The geometric block designs were unique…big, bold and beautiful.

As I worked with the Not Just Curves blocks, I felt that they needed more than the simple grid layout suggested. The blocks were out of the ordinary and they needed to be showcased. Each block needed space to be fully appreciated. The result was Off Air…a double sided king size quilt.

The name, Off Air, came about as one of the blocks in particular reminded me of the logo used by Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) when programming finished for the night and the station went off the air.
