Constraints, 2022
My personal goal for 2022 was to learn to design quilts using computer software. I had designed a few quilts in years past, scratching them out using pencil, paper and an eraser. A very limiting way to work. I needed the ability to easily make changes and go where the creativity led me. I knew very little about design software, and wasn’t sure where to begin. I eventually found my way to Alderwood Studio’s Pattern Writing Academy where I learned not only how to work with vector graphic software, but also how to write and publish patterns. Learning to work with the software involved a HUGE learning curve, with times of utter frustration…and tremendous satisfaction.
CONSTRAINTS is the realization of that goal. My first quilt designed using vector graphic software…and fully written up as a pattern.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines ‘constraint’ as the state of being checked, restricted or compelled to avoid an action. Constraint leads to the repression of one’s authentic feelings, behaviour or action.
The configuration of the quilt is representative of the conscious and sub-conscious behaviours arising from childhood trauma, depicting the results of coping mechanisms that worked to provide safety and security for the child. Unfortunately, all too often these coping behaviours become triggered responses preventing the child from realizing their full potential, and growing into their authentic adult self. The half-circles represent the human spirit, struggling against the bars, being held in the past, being kept fenced in, unable to grow and develop. The modified design of the baby quilt, although equally structured, is a gentler look at the constraints that keep an infant safe…the bars of the crib that protect the baby from harm and the softer, developing colours evoking limitless potential for growth.
